Interview with Thamsanqa Welcome Cele aka Dj Somu


Thamsanqa Welcome Cele was born and bred in Durban Kwandengezi Township.He develop his love for music from the childhood at the age of 13.In 2004 he started teaching himself music production using fruitloops.He had also released his house beat which people around the neighbourhood loved it and spreading it to Kwandengezi taxi as early as 2006 when he run his own studio and fell in love with house music.In 2010 he decide to further his production by using cubase to record artist(hip-hop,house and maskandi)around his community.He released all the artist songs for free to get the feedback from the community they respond was not good.He continue work out until 2011.2012 quit music to focus on school because he was doing matric. 2013 he came back to pursue his dream went to study at Bostoncollege Soulcandi institute of music-Sound engineering course(Digital music composition and production),duration-1 year.2014 Graduated for completing the course.

Q: How would you describe yourself in one word?

Dj Somu:
Passionate

 


Q: Why do you feel this is the ideal profession for you?

Dj Somu:
Because am passionate about my work,always on time,ambitious and driven highly organised.



Q: What do you do when not working?

Dj Somu:
Reading newspaper front to back,listen to radio station and excercising.



Q: Can you please tell us about your music Software that you Currently Used?

Dj Somu:
The music software that i currently used is Acid music studio is a recording and editing music software that allows you to easily create all types of songs with a professional quality.



Q: Where do you see yourself in three years from now, or where would you like to be?

Dj Somu:
Moving up the ranks,having a well know recording label recruiting artist and music producers.



Q: How do you balance your work and private lives?
 

Dj Somu: Build down time into my schedule,when i plan my week,i make it a point to schedule time with my family and friends.I drop activities that sap my time or energy.I remember that a little relaxation goes a long way.


Q: What is your dream project?

Dj Somu:
My dream project is music producing because i have a genuine love of music and being a producer provides the opportunity to work closely with and get to know some great musicians.I have ability to work with and assist musicians to make great music.



Q:  What are some things that you love? 

Dj Somu:
Playing a piano,meeting people who inspire me with their spunk,spirit and passion even when they do not realise . Learning new things, helping others. Music that touches my heart and the soul.

Dj Somu: The way to get started is to quit talking and being doing.

Dj Somu:
Hiphop,deephouse and a new south african genre called Igqom.

Dj Somu:
Year 2004

 

Q: Where did you study Sound engineering- digital music production and composition,music business course? 

Dj Somu: In Durban-Boston city campus and business college.
