Interview with Horaios | Amsterdam based Band

Q: Let's talk a bit about your music and what is the secret behind your band's success.

Our music is something we’ve been doing since we were kids with nothing better to do than writing music, and we would tap into any source of inspiration. Places, bands, moments and such. We don’t think there's any secret behind our success, other than staying true to the sound we hear in our heads.

Perseverance and integrity are the key. Through the years, and despite a few setbacks, our vision has crystallized thanks to the many different musical experiences that each one of us has had.

We never forgot what we are and where we came from, so one could say that this music is the sound of us coming full circle.

Q: Can you please tell our readers more about the band members and their role in the band?

The band has a very standard line-up. Believe it or not, our friendship goes back more than 20 years. The rhythm section (Tommy/Peppe, drums and bass) has been playing music together in various bands and projects (mostly post-metal, e.g. Nauseahtake), so it was only natural for them to join forces with the incredible guitar work handed out by Forest and Gianni (guitars and voices).

It all starts with guitar really. After that Tommy and  Peppe will work together and  break everything down to rhythm and harmony to enhance and support the rich melodic/harmonic structure of the chord progressions. Our two singers/guitarists are really the architects behind  the songs. When the rhythm section joins in the process of finishing a song, it's really like putting the icing on a cake that's already yummy.

It’s a laborious project, but it pays off, and everybody in the band is free to give his opinion and contribution to the final product.

We are also a self-sufficient band when it comes to recording, creating our video clips,   promotion etc. We try to keep all the aspects of being in band inside the band itself, that way we have complete control over our sonic and visual expression.

Q: Your most favourite song from your album " Outsider moon"?

It's a difficult task to pick out one, but if I had  to I'd go for "Outsidermoon", as it's the one    that most closely reflects the wide spectrum of feelings behind our music. It's melancholic, but triumphant. Peaceful but adventurous. We're all very proud of how it turned out.

Q: Please tell us more about your new video " Lady Bird "?

That one is, like most of our videos, open to interpretation. The music speaks for itself, so a video counterpart can only enhance the enjoyment of the listening experience if it doesn't take away from it, or distract the listener by showing too much. The secret to enjoying this sort of videos is to sit back and let the music guide you through the images. Each one will connect their own dots and find their own story somewhere in there.

Q: Something you wanna share about your 2nd album?

It's going to be the natural progression of its predecessor, musically. We are enjoying the writing process, with all his torment and tribulations, at the end of the day we’re always happy  and proud of our work. In terms of musical attributes, we have a lot of surprises up our sleeve. We just started exploring the immense amount of music we accumulate every year. Sometimes we joke about needing more than a lifetime to put out everything!

Q: Where do you see your band in five to 10 years time?

Still making music, possibly on a bigger scale. We enjoy our DIY approach, which certainly helps us stay true to what we want to convey musically, so we would love to own our own recording studio for us to have complete freedom and a fast workflow to flesh out the millions  of ideas and songs that come up every day. And of course, we want to be out there playing music for all those who want to hear our music live.

Q: Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to be a part of your band?

Though we have a very solid band formation, we never foreclose the possibility to collaborate with other musicians. And if anyone out there wants to participate, all we ask is to have an open mind and play from the heart, not by the book.

Q: If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Pompeii, in the amphi theatre, on a full-moon night.

Q: Have you set some goals to achieve as a band?

Make as many albums as possible, each one as honest and as well thought out as the next, for as long as we have the strength.

Q: Please share with us your proudest moments?

Every single positive response from our audience makes us proud of what we do, and happy to have gotten this project back together and still going after two decades of friendship.

Q: How can people find you and follow you online?

Our record is on every major music platform (e.g. Spotify, Deezer, youtube etc.), plus we have a bandcamp page through which it will very soon be possible to get ahold of a copy of our debut album on glorious vinyl!
